Letter to Duke of Portland
Eslington Nov[embe]r 25th 1768
My Lord
I have lately inoculated all the Tenants &
Poor People of the Estates belonging to My Lord
Ravensworth in the Parish of Willingham; & the
Poor of the Village of Larbottle belonging to y[ou]r Grace,
with which His L[or]dship acquainted you, all of
whom have happily recovered. His Lordship is
going to inoculate the remainder of the Poor upon
his different Estates, & Sir Walter Blackell has
done the same. I have several of your Graces
Tenants at present under the Operation in
Rothbury Parish, & an Order from your Grace
to Mr Rich[ar] Brown your Graces steward, to supply
such of the Poor who chuse to be inoculated, upon
your Graces different estates in this County, with
some small necessarys requisite during their
sickness, which may be done at the trifling expence
of One Shilling & Sixpence each, shall be carefully
attended Gratis. This being carried into Execution
will most cetainly releive many of our Fellow
Creatures from the Ravages of the Smallpox
& Mr Brown of Kirkharle, using his Interest
in promoting the same, with your Graces Tenantry
will tend very much to serve your Graces
most Obedient & very Humble

Having been introduced to y[ou]r Grace by Mr Nicholson
at Carlisle, & Polled with my Brother & other relations
in Favor of L[or]d Edward Bentinck & the late Election
together with your Graces well known Generous
