Building the Archive

The student publication 'Nottorama', a photograph of students being taught at Sutton Bonington, and a record of Ghandi's visit to the campus in 1931 are among the thousands of items collected by Manuscripts and Special Collections to complement the official records of the University.

'Nottorama' was published for a brief period in the 1980s by the Chinese Students Society. It included articles about Hong Kong and China as well as views on the experience of Chinese students in Nottingham.

Mrs Nora McDermott was known to her students at the Midland Agricultural College as 'the Potato Queen'. The image of her teaching students at the College dates from the late 1930s, before the College's amalgamation with Nottingham University College in 1947.

On 17 October 1931 Mahatma Ghandi addressed a packed student audience in the Great Hall. The visit was arranged because Ghandi's nephew, J V Joshi, was then a student at the College.

Photographs are important historical sources, vividly conveying the atmosphere of periods and events. The photographic collections continue to grow, and together with student publications, society ephemera, and collections of papers from staff and alumni, they support future research.
